OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance supports three basic authentication methods for a typical logon process (see Table: Basic logon methods).

- User enters user ID and OTP.
- User clicks OK to attempt a logon.
- OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance authenticates user.
| - User enters user ID and password/keyword.
- User clicks OK to request a challenge/response logon.
- OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance generates a challenge.
- User enters the challenge into the authenticator.
- The authenticator generates an OTP from the supplied challenge.
- User enters the OTP into the logon window.
- User clicks OK to attempt a logon.
- OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance authenticates user.
| - User enters user ID and password/keyword.
- User clicks OK to request a Virtual Mobile Authenticator logon.
- OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance verifies if user is allowed to use Virtual Mobile Authenticator.
- OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance generates an OTP and sends it to the user.
- User receives the OTP (i.e. via SMS).
- User enters the password/keyword and OTP into the logon window.
- User clicks OK to attempt a logon.
- OneSpan Authentication Server Appliance authenticates user.
