# Default domain

In some cases, only a user ID is supplied for authentication. In this case, it is still necessary to identify a corresponding domain to look up the user account. For this purpose, a default domain is used.

The default domain can be configured in the following ways:

- The default domain can be configured in the policy record. In this case, the default domain will be used if no domain has been identified.
- If the policy has no default domain set, the master domain will be used.
