# HSM connection issues

If all the defined hardware security module (HSM) devices disconnect, OneSpan Authentication Server will try to reconnect. When this occurs there will be a delay, the length depends on the session pool size.

- On Windows, if there is a 1-second timeout defined, then the delay will be 1 second per session on the HSM. Therefore, if the session pool size is 20, there will actually be 40 sessions running on the HSM (20 for sensitive data and 20 for authenticator storage). OneSpan Authentication Server will not respond for at least 40 seconds in this case.
- On Linux, if there is a 1-second timeout defined, then each reconnection will be done almost instantaneously.
