# Handling large numbers of audit messages

There are a couple of ways to handle large numbers of audit messages from a single audit source, e.g. a large database, or a high number of text files:

- Set a filter for a window before you open an audit source. This limits the number of audit messages that are retrieved from the source, minimizing the resources used. See [Filtering audit messages](/sec/docs/oas-av-csh-filtering-audit-messages-3-28).
- Set the number of messages to display. This limits the number of messages displayed at one time. More audit messages may be viewed using the >> and << buttons. See [Limiting the number of displayed audit messages](/sec/docs/oas-av-csh-limiting-the-number-of-displayed-audit-messages-3-28).
