# Identifying the policy

Policies specify various settings that affect request handling. Each request is handled according to a policy, which is identified by the applicable client component record (see [Policies](/sec/docs/oas-pg-policies-3-28)).

Policies can also be assigned to server components. However, this feature is not relevant for the authentication process.
