Install Rancher Desktop on MacOS

Download Rancher Desktop Installer from https://rancherdesktop.io/.

Double click the downloaded file and drag the Rancher Desktop icon to the application directory shown in the installer window to complete the installation.

Launch the Rancher Desktop application. You see the alert shown below. Click Open.

The Rancher Desktop dialog appears. Select dockerd (moby). Click Accept.

The Rancher Desktop app appears. Click on the Gear icon on the top right to bring up the Preferences dialog.

Click Virtual Machine in the Preferences menu. Change Memory (GB) to 8 GB and # CPUs to 4.

Click Container Engine in the Preferences menu. Make sure that the dockerd (moby) option is selected. Click Apply.

Click Kubernetes in the Preferences menu. Deselect Enable Traefik.

Open the Terminal app on your Mac. Run:

which docker

If the docker command is not in $HOME/.rd/bin directory, do the following:

  1. Edit .bashrc / .zshrc or any other init scripts currently in use for your account to include $HOME/.rd/bin in your path.

  2. Source your change or re-login for this PATH change to be effective.

  3. Confirm that the change is effective by running: docker image ls command. This command should show something similar to:

$ docker image ls

Install Docker Community Edition (CE)

Follow these instructions to install Docker CE on Rocky Linux. For more information and downloads, see https://docs.docker.com/engine/install

sudo dnf update -y
sudo dnf install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-compose-plugin

newgrp docker

Verify Docker Installation

The following commands verify the Docker CE installation on Rocky Linux.

vi docker-compose.yaml

Use the following sample compose content:

services:
  hello:
    image: alpine:latest
    command: [/bin/echo, 'Hello there!']

Run these commands to verify the installation:

docker compose up
# 'Hello there!' should show up in the console
docker compose down

Install Minikube and Helm

This section contains instructions to install Minikube and Helm on Rocky Linux. Note that Rancher Desktop for MacOS already includes these tools so no additional installation is necessary.

1. Install Minikube.

Download and Install Minikube and kubectl binary.

$ curl -LO https://storage.googleapis.com/minikube/releases/latest/minikube-linux-amd64
$ sudo install minikube-linux-amd64 /usr/local/bin/minikube

2. Install Kubectl binary.

$ curl -LO "https://dl.k8s.io/release/$(curl -L -s https://dl.k8s.io/release/stable.txt)/bin/linux/amd64/kubectl"
$ sudo cp kubectl /usr/local/bin/ && sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/kubectl

3. Start the minikube cluster.

minikube start --cpus=4 --memory=8g --addons=ingress

4. Install Helm.

$ curl -fsSL -o get_helm.sh \
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/helm/helm/master/scripts/get-helm-3

Grant execute permissions.

$ chmod 700 get_helm.sh
$ ./get_helm.sh

Check the version of Helm.

$ helm version
