Manual offline activation

Prev Next

For manual offline activation, the activation data is provided manually to Mobile Authenticator Studio. To enable your users to activate their account(s), you must provide the authenticator’s serial number and activation code to them prior to the activation (e.g. in a sealed letter).

To manually activate an account offline

  1. The user is presented with the authenticator home screen and taps Manual activation to initiate the activation process.

  2. The user must enter the serial number and activation code.

  3. If you configured the Mobile Authenticator Studio app for protection, the user must choose a PIN.

  4. The user confirms the PIN.

  5. The user chooses their preferred authentication method for future access: biometric authentication with face or fingerprint recognition, or authentication via PIN.

If the user selects to skip setting up biometric authentication at this stage, they can enable this feature anytime later via the Mobile Authenticator Studio menu. For more information, see Biometric authentication.

  6. The user gives Mobile Authenticator Studio permission to use face or fingerprint recognition.

  7. The user's biometric data is collected.

  8. The Mobile Authenticator Studio app generates a code which the user enters into your application or web page.

  9. The user taps Done, and the activation is completed.

  10. The user is redirected to the activated home screen, and the app is ready to be used for authentication.

Instead of entering a serial number (e.g. FDM1280189), the user could enter a serial number suffix (e.g. 1280189). However, this is not recommended because the serial number prefix will be retrieved from the static vector. Thus, the serial number prefix can differ from the static vector that is hardcoded in the mobile app (e.g. FDL) and the authenticator BLOBs used by the server (e.g. FDM). In this case, the authenticator account (i.e., an instance of the authenticator) will be properly activated, but the generated authenticator responses (i.e. OTP and signature) will be invalid.

If the process is interrupted, the user will see these screens:

  • If at any time the user taps Cancel they will see a cancel confirmation screen and can restart the activation process.

  • If something goes wrong, the user will be notified with an error message and tapping Start over will restart the activation procedure from the beginning.
